New Born Care
- Holding: Your newborn’s neck muscles are not yet developed, so you will need to support her head whenever you pick her up. Support her head against your shoulder or with your opposite hand while carrying her. Most babies start to attain head control by 4 to 5 months of age.
- Bathing and Massage: Baby care after birth involves bathing, which can be challenging for new parents. Babies’ skin is very sensitive and may not tolerate massage or daily bathing. Massages relax babies, improve sleep patterns, and calm them when irritable. Giving a massage is also a great way to bond with your baby. The type of oil or lotion does not matter as long as it suits your child.
- Diaper Change and Diaper Rash: Many first-time parents are surprised by how many diapers a baby uses daily. Be prepared for diaper rashes. Keep your baby’s diaper area dry and apply diaper rash cream. This repels moisture and reduces friction on the skin, providing complete protection.
- Comforting: Most babies cry an average of 2 hours a day during the first 3 months. To comfort your baby, determine the cause of discomfort—hunger, gas, diaper, nap, or overstimulation by noise, lights, or activity. To soothe a sleepy or over-stimulated baby, hold her on your shoulder while gently rocking, sing or speak softly, and rub her back. Try different positions to find one comfortable for both of you.
- Feeding: Nothing is better for your newborn than breast milk, which is nutritionally tailor-made for your infant. Nursing and feeding help build a strong, loving bond between you and your baby.
- Sleep: Your baby’s sleep patterns change as they grow. Newborns sleep most of the 24 hours, waking frequently. As your baby grows, they develop a more structured night-time sleep routine with fewer daytime naps. You can help by teaching that night-time is for sleep, not play.
